Species Info:

  • General: Known as the European Fire Ant, Myrmica rubra is a hardy and aggressive species. Colonies are polygynous and can host multiple queens. Workers and queens are reddish-brown with a slightly darker head and gaster. Highly active and prolific when well-fed and warm.
  • Diet: Omnivorous, opportunistic feeders. They need liquid sugars often and readily take proteins including mealworms, crickets, and cooked meats. Food availability strongly drives colony growth.
  • Temperature: Thrives in moderate warmth without needing extreme heat. A 75-82°F range is ideal for brood development.
  • Diapause: Requires a 3-4 month diapause around 40°F. Use a wine cooler, mini fridge, or an unheated area above freezing. Gradual cooling over a week is recommended.
  • Growth: Brood develops in 5-7 weeks depending on heat and food. With multiple queens, colonies grow rapidly and reach thousands of workers within a few years.
